Design and Technology

Welcome to Design & Technology at Newfold.

"We aim to provide children with high quality Design and Technology experiences, which enable children to solve real and relevant challenges within a variety of contexts.  Using knowledge from other subject areas children can find solutions to real life problems. They work practically, both independently and within teams, allowing them to develop the skills necessary for the future.  Stimulating challenges and resources feed children's natural curiosity and promote a zest for life-long learning."

Spring Term - Knowledge Organisers

Iterative Design

At Newfold, we are passionate about promoting the importance of the iterative design process.  Design Technology is a journey - some of our ideas will work, whilst others may be less successful.  We see the ideas that don't necessarily have the outcomes we want as key learning opportunities for children to develop their skills and understanding of how engineers in the world work.  Sir James Dyson famously made 5,127 prototypes of his  Dyson vacuum cleaner before achieving the outcomes he wanted!  We aim to provide children with the key skills necessary to enable them to achieve success, whilst nurturing their ability to make their own design decisions, test their products and adapt their ideas as they work.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

During the Spring Term children in Year 3 are being given the opportunity to participate in Cookery Club.  This term we will be focusing on sustainability, thinking about where our food comes from, how to reduce our carbon footprint and make our food go further!  We will be making a selection of tasty treats to bring home, along with a recipe card for us to have a go at home.  Keep your eyes peeled for pictures of us in action!

Cookery Club begins on Thursday 10th March - 3:30 until 4:30.  Feel free to bring your own apron.  Pick up will be from the KS1 building.
